Granny Square Cardigan Steps

Step 1: Make Your Granny Squares

Each square is made with:

Round 1: Start with magic ring or CH 4 and join.

CH 3 (counting as first DC), work 2 DC, CH 2

(3 DC, CH 2) repeat 3 more times

SL ST to join (you now have 4 clusters and 4 corners)

Rounds 2–4 (or more):

CH 3, 2 DC in corner space, CH 2, 3 DC in same space

(3 DC in next space, 3 DC CH 2 3 DC in corner) repeat

Continue on until you have your desired square size

Make 16–24 squares depending on design and size!

Step 2: Square Arrangement and Joining

Design tip for a small/medium cardigan:

4 squares per front panel

4 squares for the back

2 squares per sleeve (or extra ones for longer arms)

Join squares using SC or SL ST in back loops only for an invisible join.

Step 3: Sleeves

Fold your piece and attach squares to sides for sleeves

Sew underarm and side seams

You can also crochet around the arm opening to extend sleeves in one color

Step 4: Add the Border

SC or HDC around the entire cardigan (front opening, neckline, and bottom)

Add 2–3 rows to make it sleek and thick

Optional: Add buttons or a tie front!

You just created a granny square cardigan that’s one of a kind! It’s fun, comfy, and bursting with color. Wear it with jeans, dresses, or even over a swimsuit. Mix colours, try floral squares, or go full vintage next time!
