Small Crochet Bag Pattern

Material Needed:

  • Medium-weight yarn of any colour of your choice
  • 5.0 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Optional: 1-2 buttons for closing

Stitch Guide:

  • SC (Single Crochet): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over pull through both loops.
  • HDC (Half Double Crochet): Yarn over pull through, insert hook, yarn over pull through, yarn over pull through all three loops.

Step 1: Create the Bag Base

First, tie a Slip Knot

Begin with a slip knot on the hook.

Chain at the Base

Chain 30 (or any number of your choice) stitches.

Work the Foundation Row

Row 1: HDC in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across; 28 HDC.

2nd Row: Ch 2, turn. HDC in each st across (28 HDC).

Hint: This starting chain can be worked to the desired size for the bag, but just make it an even number so that the following rows will work out.

Body of the bag - Step 2:

1. Proceed with Rows

Rows 3 - 12: Repeat Row 2 for 10 more rows. This will give height to the bag.

2. Create the Side Seams

Once you’ve reached your desired height, fold the piece in half with the right sides facing each other.

Sl st or sc on both side seams to complete the shape of the bag. Do not close the top.

Why it matters: This means durability in constructing the bag while keeping it rather simple in style.

Step 3: Construction of Bag Handles

1. Create the Handles

Row 1: Join your yarn at the top edge of the bag, working with the right side facing out. Chain 10.

2nd row: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. (9 sc).

2. Attach the Handle

Sl stitch to the top edge of the bag on the opposite side to form a loop. Repeat for the second handle on the other side. Pro Tip: You can extend the handles by chaining more stitches in Row 1!

Step 4: Adding a Closure

Optional Button Fastening Attach a closure to the top flap of the bag by sewing a button and making a small loop with yarn or chain stitch on the opposite side to lock in.

Creative Tip: Use fancy buttons or other embellishments to decorate your bag.
