Christmas Lights Blanket Pattern

Things needed:

  • Medium-weight yarn: festive colours like green, red, yellow, blue, white, and black
  • 5.5 mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Stitch Guide:

  • SC (Single Crochet): Insert hook, yarn over, pull through; yarn over, pull through both loops.
  • DC - Double Crochet - Yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over, pull through, yarn over, pull through two loops, yarn over pull through remaining two loops.

Step 1: Crochet the Light Bulb Motifs

Each light bulb motif should include a rounded bulb and a small "base" to which it is attached on the strand. Make some light bulbs in the following colours: red, green, yellow, and blue.

Create the Shape of the Bulb

Round 1: Use any colour of yarn to create a magic circle and crochet 8 SC into the ring, pull tight and slip stitch to join.

Round 2: Chain 1, then work 2 SC in each stitch around. Total number of stitches is 16. Slip stitch to join.

Shape the Bulb using Decreases

Round 3: Ch 1, then (SC in the next st, SC Dec) around until about 12 sts remain.

Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. The top of the bulb should be rounded.

Making the Base of the Bulb

Attach black yarn to the bottom of the bulb. Chain 1, and work 4-5 SC across the bottom edge to form the bulb's "base.".

Fasten off, and weave in ends.

Helpful Hint: Make each lightbulb a different colour for added visual effect when on the blanket.

Step 2- Base of the Blanket

  • The base is very simple, just to make the coloured bulbs of light stand out.
  • Chain the width of the Afghan
  • Start with white yarn and chain into the desired width-for a small throw blanket, this would be about 100 chains.

Work Single Crochet Rows

Rows 1-100: SC in each stitch across. Chain 1, turn at the end of the row. Repeat until the length of the blanket is as desired.

Why it matters: Single crochet rows become major backgrounds on which coloured light bulbs pop.

Step 3: Secure the Light Bulbs on the Blanket

Plant the Bulbs

  • Lay the blanket out flat and set the bulbs in a zig-zag pattern across the blanket. Place about 4 inches between each bulb.
  • Sew the Bulbs onto the Blanket Sew each bulb securely to the blanket using the yarn tail left from each and a yarn needle.

Creative Tip: Consider a more playful layout, like a zig-zag, to mimic how lights are pulled and wrapped around a tree or wall.

Step 4: Between the bullets, insert the "String

Black yarn represents the strings that string each bulb together to give this blanket the look of real Christmas lights.

Attach Black Yarn Starting at the top of the blanket, single crochet the black yarn across the blanket in a zig-zag, connecting each of the light bulbs.

Proceed to the End Single crochet across the blanket with the black yarn, attaching it to the bottom of each bulb as you go.

Pro Tip: Keep the yarn slightly loose so that the "string" doesn't pull the blanket out of shape.

Ready to spread some holiday cheer? Get your yarn and hook ready; now it is your turn to light up the season!
